A FEW TOWNSHIP EMPLOYEES BEGAN LISTING SOME OF THE “OLD” BUSINESSES IN CHIPPEWA TOWNSHIP
• The head went missing from “The Cow” • Stubby’s and Charlies Courtside were the “in” places • Keisters Cabin was where Sal’s restaurant is now • Fox’s pizza was located on Rt. 51 and McKinley Rd. • Golden Dawn was in the plaza on Darlington Rd. • IGA Super Dollar was located at 2400 Darlington Rd. • Xcelerator was: Martini’s, Circle Inn, Edna Mays, Good Spirits, Headstones, Pint & Platter • Christ the Divine Teacher held mass at Corsi’s Restaurant • The Chippewa Mall had all indoor shops – Pizza Boy, Wilson’s Video, Hallmark, The Arcade • We had the Super 51 drive-in • There was a small library where the Farm to Fork is now • A gas station and convenience store were on Darlington Rd. across from Citizens Bank • Ralph’s corner market had the best penny candy and New York style pizza on Blackhawk Rd. • Lawson’s was the place to go for a Slush Puppie after a baseball game played behind at the fields • There was a Dairy Queen at the corner of Blackhawk Rd. and Darlington Rd. • Chippewa had a bakery • There were payphones outside of every convenience store • Everything was closed on Sunday • There was no expressway • There was PM Moore Hardware • We had Olsen’s Pharmacy • We had a shoe store “Payless Shoes” • There was Corsi’s (Whimpy’s) CW’s Bar • Chippewa had a Pool • We had Phil’s Marquette • Panella’s Fruit Market • Gump’s sold Christmas Trees • The BQF Cafeteria Restaurant was at the location where the Hot Dog Shoppe is now • There was reception hall at the Jewish Center • Christ Divine had their bazaar • The State Police Barracks was at the corner of McKinley Rd. and Rt. 51 • The Suburban was on Rt. 51 • There was the Lil Store by the Birnesser Plan • There was also the fish and penny candy store • There was the Blue Ridge Golf Driving Range • We had Dick’s Putt N Putt • We had a Perkins Restaurant • There was old motel by Mount Olive Church • You could get penny candy at Gratz’s Store • Full service gas stations • Stop signs at all major intersections
